Some projects start with a plan, a material, or a design concept, and some start first and foremost with a person. The result is a personal, precise and enveloping apartment, which manages to combine design drama with a sense of comfort, security and belonging.<\/span>Ofri Paz | STANNELThe apartment, with an area of approximately 130 square meters, was originally a five-room apartment and was converted into a more spacious four-room apartment. Already in the early stages, even before the purchase, Ohayon accompanied the client not only in the planning and design aspects, but also in the personal process of choosing an apartment that would become her first private home, one that she could design and plan exactly according to her needs, taste and lifestyle. “She contacted me even before the purchase, for guidance throughout the entire process,” he says. “Both mentally, to understand how things work, and also on a personal level, in parallel with the design process.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The design language of the house is based on dramatic yet balanced materiality, and meticulous detail work. Knife profiles, cut-off profiles, STR profiles, and custom carpentry were incorporated throughout the apartment, creating a continuous envelope of storage, wall coverings, and canopied doors. The floor in the public spaces was covered with a concrete-like, pressed tile, while in the rooms, a relatively light, natural wood parquet was chosen, intended to soften the atmosphere and bring in warmth. “The house was designed with very straight and precise lines,” says Ohayon, “with carpentry that wraps around the entire house.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The hallway, which usually remains a quiet, characterless passageway, also received significant design treatment here. On one side, a concrete screed was incorporated that adds a rough, natural texture and gives the passageway an architectural look, and on the other side, mirrors were placed that enlarge the space and create a feeling of a meticulous, almost hotel-like passageway. A strip of LED lighting accompanies movement along it and connects the public space with the private area. “The hallway is usually something casual, white, with doors. Here we took it one step further,” he explains. “I wanted to respect the transitions between the bedroom and the living room, so that the drama, design, and beauty would continue.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The client’s bedroom is the heart of the project and the place where the desire to create a new, personal, and luxurious living experience for her was expressed. One of the key steps in the planning was to eliminate one of the rooms in favor of expanding the bedroom and creating a large and spacious suite, which includes a sleeping area, an open bathroom, and a luxurious walk-in closet. “We expanded and enlarged the space as much as possible,” says Ohayon. “We eliminated one room in favor of the bedroom to create a large master bedroom, we also enlarged the shower, which was originally small and cramped, and we added the closet room.” The bathroom opens to the bedroom using Galina glass partitions, and opposite was designed the closet room, also in combination with Galina glass. “We created a dream suite for her, with a large shower open to the space and a luxurious walk-in closet opposite,” he adds. Within the precise and restrained shell of the house, a thin terrazzo tile was incorporated into the shower, which introduces a more material and colorful surprise to the bathroom. This is a detail that is suitable, as Ohayon describes, for “brave clients,” and adds a moment of interest to the suite without burdening the overall language.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the center of the suite was incorporatedNOA bed by Hollandia<\/strong>, which was carefully chosen for its clean, minimalist, Japanese look, with grooved lines in black wood. “In the bedroom, we didn’t compromise on comfort or quality,” says Ohayon. “She has the dream bed. We specifically chose the Noa bed by Hollandia for its clean, minimalist, Japanese look, with grooved lines in black wood, which suited the design language of the house perfectly.” The NOA bed, from the global AUPING brand, was designed in collaboration with Danish designer Eva Harlow, and it brings modern Nordic inspiration to the space, wood production in the tradition of Nordic furniture, and attention to raw materials and durability over the years. The hidden fasteners maintain a clean and meticulous look, while the combination with a mattressTempur Form<\/strong>Adds a layer of support and comfort to the sleeping experience. Thus, the bed becomes an item that combines design, quality and daily use, complementing the sense of peace, precision and personal luxury of the entire suite.<\/p>\n

At the center of the public space is an active kitchen, designed with comfort, accessibility, and daily use in mind. Since the client is an active grandmother whose grandchildren are with her regularly and Friday dinners are held at her home every week, it was important to create a practical kitchen with easy passageways, a wide work surface, and a design that allows her to be part of the action. \u201cAs a woman in her thirties, it was important to us that the kitchen be functional and practical, comfortable, and accessible,\u201d says Ohayon. The stove was placed on the island, so that she could cook facing the house and maintain eye contact with family members, while the sink and less presentable work area were placed to the side, away from the direct view of the living space. \u201cWe placed the stove on the island so that she could cook facing the house and have eye contact with everyone,\u201d he adds. \u201cThe sink and the mess are placed to the side, and they are less prominent than the living space.\u201d Despite the emphasis on practicality, the design was not pushed aside. The kitchen was chosen in a lighter, softer shade, which balances the dark, dramatic nature of the house. “We didn’t compromise on the design,” says Ohayon.<\/span><\/p>\n

The dining area continues the same language, with a leather table in a precise shade adapted to the kitchen, which includes a smart enlargement option from a side drawer, without having to move the table. Above the kitchen and dining area, lighting fixtures personally imported from Italy were incorporated, which add an additional layer of elegance and precision. In the living room, a leather sofa in a camel shade was chosen, cheeky, lively and full of style, but also especially practical for a home where grandchildren eat, play and are free. “We chose a leather living room, so that the grandchildren can eat and get dirty freely and everything will be easy to clean,” explains Ohayon. The choice of leather allows for easy maintenance and simple cleaning, without sacrificing a significant design presence. In the center of the living room is a round table with a diameter of 120 cm, which can be rotated for maximum comfort for all guests.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the most prominent elements in the space is the dining area wall, which is clad in black oven-painted wood with CNC cuts. The wall continues a smart carpentry unit in the living room, which wraps around the space and also integrates the front door, thus creating a continuous, clean and precise facade. At first, the client was wary of a black wall in the house, but after trusting the designer and the wall was completed, it became one of the impressive focal points in the apartment. A carefully selected work of art was incorporated above it. “I knew right away that this was what was supposed to be there,” says Ohayon. “We invited the artist to present the painting, which in my opinion blends in with the sofa and the materials and gives dynamics and movement to the space.” After some deliberation, the piece was left in place for three days of trial, during which the client fell in love with it and decided to keep it.<\/span><\/p>\n

The main outdoor area of the apartment is the sun terrace, which has become the client’s private kingdom. Since she used to smoke in the living room, it was decided that in the new house, smoking is not allowed inside the interior spaces, and the balcony was designed as a pleasant and luxurious alternative. It is covered with plasterboard, lighting, a ceiling fan and a television were integrated, and the furniture was adapted to outdoor conditions. “Her private kingdom is the sun terrace,” says Ohayon. “It is a corner outside that is like an extension of the house, and thus a private living room is created that also functions as a smoking area.” This creates a private outdoor space, comfortable to use in summer and winter, that continues the house without introducing the act of smoking into the interior spaces.<\/span><\/p>\n
