The Vals Thermal Baths – one of the most recognizable works of Swiss Pritzker Prize-winning architect Peter Zumthor – recently returned to the spotlight with the world premiere of From Inside Out – The Architecture of Peter Zumthor at the Venice Film Festival. Wim Wenders’ new documentary, shot over more than 14 years in 3D and executive produced by Brad Pitt, follows Zumthor’s work through some of his most significant projects, including Therme Vals. The baths are the heart of the complex 7132 Hotel<\/strong>, located in the village of Vals, at an altitude of 1,252 meters in the heart of the Swiss Alps. Over the years, an extraordinary architectural ensemble has developed around Tsumetur’s work, which was also joined by Kengo Kuma, Tadao Ando, and Thom Main from the Morphosis office – each with a different interpretation of the encounter between architecture, material, and landscape.<\/p>\n

Design and culture<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the heart of the complex’s architectural story is the baths, designed by Peter Zumthor, which opened in 1996 after he was commissioned to create an alternative to the old Vals bathing complex. The massive structure is made of raw concrete and some 60,000 slabs of local quartzite stone, and within just two years of its opening it had already been declared a conservation property. Zumthor created a space here where stone, light, water and acoustics are not just an envelope but an integral part of the way the place is experienced. <\/p>\n

This approach continues in the parts that have been added to the complex over the years. 7132 House of Architects was born from an invitation to four international architects – Zumthor, Tadao Ando, Kengo Kuma and Thom Main – to each offer their own interpretation of a hotel room. Rather than trying to create a uniform language, the complex actually emphasizes their differences and makes the meeting of approaches part of its identity. <\/p>\n

Morphosis, Thom Mayne’s office, is also responsible for the building’s entrance and lobby. A ramp and set of stairs lead to a white, rounded canopy, centered by a large opening to the sky. The move creates a clear moment of transition between the exterior and interior, while at the same time keeping the mountain, light, and alpine surroundings present within the architectural gesture.<\/p>\n

Spa and Wellness<\/strong><\/p>\n

The movement in the 7132 Therme bath complex is not dictated by one clear route. The spaces are gradually revealed, between heavy stone walls, measured openings and closed and open areas, almost like a series of rooms carved out of the mass. The six pools range from 14 degrees in the ice pool to 42 degrees in the fire pool, alongside a flower pool, a spring grotto and an outdoor pool facing the mountains. Three times a week, the place also hosts night bathing, when the baths are open to hotel guests until 1 am. <\/p>\n

Alongside the baths, there is also a spa that includes seven treatment rooms and a dedicated water massage room, with treatments some of which draw inspiration from the local environment and use Valais quartzite stone. The energy system is also linked to the natural source of the place: the heat of the spring is used via a heat exchange system to heat the pools and the hotels. <\/p>\n

The hospitality concept continues the same line of slowing down and distancing oneself from the daily rhythm. 7132 presents itself as a hideaway where silence, time, and direct contact with the environment are part of the luxuries. The ban on the use of phones and devices with cameras inside the baths also reinforces this idea – a place designed to be experienced through the body and space, not through a screen.<\/p>\n

Rooms and suites<\/strong><\/p>\n

Accommodation options in the complex are divided between several buildings, each with a different character: 7132 Hotel 5S is the more central and luxurious hotel, 7132 House of Architects, where the rooms were designed by four international architects, and the 7132 Glenner guesthouse in the center of the village. <\/p>\n

The luxurious 7132 Hotel 5S has 22 rooms and suites. Here, the language is brighter and more restrained, with natural materials and large openings that bring the Alpine environment inside. On the top floor, Kengo Koram designed three penthouse suites, each about 90 square meters in area, with almost full glass facades that leave most of the stage to the mountains.<\/p>\n

7132 House of Architects has 73 rooms designed by the four architects. Each has the same basic envelope of about 20 square meters, but the result varies completely from room to room. Thus, the choice of room becomes almost a choice of the architect and his perspective. <\/p>\n

Tadao Ando designed 18 rooms as a tribute to the restrained aesthetics of Japanese tea houses. Wood, clean lines and a quiet composition direct the eye to the mountain slope beyond the window. At Kengo Koma, the 23 rooms wrap the guest in oak and use the traditions of Japanese carpentry to create a warm and intimate envelope; in the center of each room is an open shower at floor level on a base of local granite. <\/p>\n

The ten rooms designed by Peter Tsumetor use stucco lustro, a polished plaster technique originating from the Italian Renaissance, in red, black and yellow, alongside hand-painted Habotai silk curtains. The result is richer and more sensual, but still precise and limited in detail. On the other hand, in the 22 The rooms by Thom Main and Morphosis take on a sculptural character, with local wood or dark quartzite and an organically shaped freestanding shower placed in the center of the space. <\/p>\n

In the center of the village stands 7132 Glenner, which offers a different and more local hospitality experience, with 12 rooms measuring 20 to 32 square meters. The design is based on a more traditional Alpine language, but maintains a contemporary and pleasant line, thus creating another link between the village itself and the architectural complex at its edge.<\/p>\n

Culinary and bars<\/strong><\/p>\n

The culinary scene in the complex continues the encounter between the place and international influences. The 7132 Silver restaurant, designed by Tsomtor, holds two Michelin stars and is currently led by chef Marcel Köln. The kitchen combines luxurious raw materials with mushrooms, herbs and berries that the team collects in the Valais region, translating the Alpine environment into a contemporary culinary language. <\/p>\n

The complex also operates 7132 Red, which offers more classic cuisine, 7132 Blue Bar in the lobby, and the Italian-inspired 7132 daPapà restaurant. Here too, there is no attempt to create a single culinary identity, but a variety of experiences that range from formal to a more relaxed atmosphere, as part of the overall stay at the place.<\/p>\n

Location and environment<\/strong><\/p>\n

The accommodation complex is located at the entrance to the village of Vals, a small settlement with about a thousand residents at an altitude of 1,252 meters in the heart of the Swiss Alps. The hotel’s name is derived from the local zip code, and in a certain sense also sums up its concept: it is a complex that seeks to be rooted in the place and not exist as an enclave separate from it. The local stone, the thermal springs, the landscape and the Alpine tradition are repeated again and again in both the design and the hospitality experience. <\/p>\n

Today, the complex includes several accommodation frameworks of different nature, from a five-star hotel to a House of Architects and another guesthouse in the center of the village, alongside the baths, spa, restaurants and common spaces. Instead of seeking uniformity between all its parts, 7132 relies on the connection between contrasts – between local tradition and contemporary design, between Alpine intimacy and international names and between the building and the landscape that surrounds it. This is also the thread that connects all parts of the complex: the architecture is not a setting for a vacation, but one of the elements that defines it.<\/p>\n
