At first glance, it looks like someone has taken a small Alpine village, turned some of its huts upside down, and left it suspended in midair, high above the valley. Not far away, a long swimming pool extends over the edge of the structure, until the water seems to extend into the mountain landscape. These are two of the unusual architectural elements of Hotel Hubertus<\/strong>, a five-star hotel located at an altitude of approximately 1,350 meters above sea level, in the town of Valdaora in South Tyrol, Italy. The architectural studio is responsible for the design of the two iconic additions. NOAA<\/strong>, which transformed the encounter between the building and the landscape into a fascinating experiment in perspective, material and gravity. But behind the contemporary architecture lies a family story that begins almost six decades earlier. <\/p>\n

In 1968, Franz Gasser purchased the building where the hotel’s story began, and in 1984, management passed to his son Christian, then 21, who operated a modest two-star guesthouse on the site. Over the years, Christian and his wife Helga gradually expanded the family business, until it became one of the most prominent spa hotels in the area. In 2020, management of the business passed to the next generation, the brothers Daniela and Markus Gasser, who continue to develop it alongside their parents. Hubertus’s development is not the result of a single planning move, but of a series of additions and changes, each of which sought to create a new connection with the environment. Today, after another renovation completed in the spring of 2026, the hotel combines traditional Alpine architecture with bold contemporary buildings, spacious wellness areas and a family hospitality experience, of which the view is an integral part.<\/p>\n

Design and architecture<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the key challenges in the development of Hubertus was connecting the various parts of the hotel, which were built over decades. As part of a major expansion completed in 2016, a new wing was added to the hotel, including 16 suites, alongside dining spaces, an entrance area, a wine cellar, and fitness and relaxation areas. The remaining parts of the hotel were designed by Studio BERGUNDTAL<\/strong><\/a>, while the studio NOAA<\/strong> <\/a>Designed its two iconic additions, the Sky Pool and the Heaven & Hell complex. The hotel’s design maintained a uniform formal and material language, inspired by the topographic lines of the slope on which the building stands. <\/p>\n

The building’s facades incorporate local larch tree trunks, stripped of their bark and arranged in a varying rhythm. Beyond their aesthetic function, they serve to provide shade, protection from the rain and create privacy, and in some cases also as constructive elements. The perforated metal railings, in brown-gray tones taken from the color palette of the landscape, continue the visual language and allow views of the valley without completely revealing the private spaces. The curved lines of the new wing follow the contours of the land and soften the encounter between the large building and the steep slope.<\/p>\n

The highlight of the architectural intervention is the Sky Pool, a 25-meter-long infinity pool, built between the two hospitality wings and extending about 12 meters beyond the building line, into the open space. The pool is clad in dark charcoal-gray stone and supported by large tree trunks. Its walls blur the boundary between water and sky, while a glass window integrated into its bottom allows bathers to look down into the space below them. The design draws inspiration from the image of a large rock that has landed between the two buildings, but the result actually creates a feeling of lightness, almost weightlessness.<\/p>\n

Six years later, in 2022, NOA Studio returned to the hotel with the Hub of Huts project, also known as Sky Spa Heaven & Hell. This time, the architects literally turned the principles of alpine construction on their head. On a steel platform floating above the ground, a cluster of small buildings with sloping roofs was designed, reminiscent of mountain village houses. Some stand in the conventional direction and others are reversed, as if the reflection of a village in the pool water had become an architectural reality.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Lucas Runger, one of the founders of Studio NOA, explains the idea as a play on reversing the horizon line and changing the point of view. The division of the levels is also based on contrast: the upper level is open and more exposed to the view, while the lower level is intimate and protected, with saunas and spaces designed for extended stays. Aluminum cladding in natural brown tones, vertical shading and light ceramic floors create a relatively restrained envelope for the dramatic form. In the adjacent relaxation room, an oiled white oak floor was incorporated, adding warmth to the space.<\/p>\n

The latest renovation, completed in May 2026, focuses specifically on the spaces that connect the architectural focal points. The entrance area and lobby have been redesigned, along with a renovation of the building envelope and an expansion of the spa areas. The design language in these spaces is minimalist and warmer, with the use of wood, natural tones and wide openings. Rather than competing with the floating architecture outside the building, the new spaces seek to create a sense of continuity and give the view a central place.<\/p>\n

Rooms and suites<\/strong><\/p>\n

The same connection to the environment is also evident in the guest rooms, which offer different interpretations of contemporary Alpine design. The Panorama Rooms and Suites are dominated by natural wood, warm tones, soft furnishings and large windows facing the mountains. Some rooms have integrated contemporary-style heaters, wooden partitions and rounded balconies, continuing the lines of the hotel’s facades. <\/p>\n

The Belvederes rooms, measuring 42 m², are inspired by traditional mountain chalets and feature wooden floors, a stove, a seating area and a freestanding bathtub facing the view. In the Dolomites Sauna Suite, measuring 46 m², the spa experience enters the private space with a sauna overlooking the valley. The Lumes Suites, of similar size, also add a private massage pool. The differences between the categories allow you to choose between an intimate cabin atmosphere and a more open and luxurious stay experience, but the view remains a central element in the design of all of them.<\/p>\n

Spa and wellness<\/strong><\/p>\n

At Hubertus, the spa experience is not concentrated in one space, but rather spreads out among pools, gardens, saunas, and relaxation areas spread across different levels. The hotel’s wellness and spa complexes cover approximately 7,000 square meters and include nine pools and nine saunas, integrated into the interior and exterior spaces. The heated pools allow bathing even in the winter months, when snow covers the slopes, and the Sky Pool is maintained at a temperature of approximately 33 degrees throughout the year. <\/p>\n

In the Heaven & Hell complex, the transition between levels is also a transition between different physical experiences. Above are panoramic massage pools and open bathing areas, while below are a Finnish sauna, a sauna at a milder temperature and cooling facilities, including an ice mist shower. The movement between heat and cold, between closed and open spaces, is part of the complex’s design concept. A suspension bridge connects it to a relaxation room surrounded by glass windows, where the view returns to the landscape from a different angle.<\/p>\n

The 2026 renovation also expanded the existing sauna area, with a panoramic event sauna designed for guided sauna ceremonies, a milder bio sauna, and a steam room. The new panoramic sauna combines fish-skin wood paneling and a wide window overlooking the valley, and is located under a green roof that blends into the garden spaces. Rest and meditation spaces have been added alongside it, allowing for a quieter and more personal experience.<\/p>\n

The Alpenreych Spa treatment center completes the experience with massages, body and facial treatments, treatments based on alpine herbs and treatments inspired by Ayurveda. The treatment wing was renovated and expanded in 2024, as part of the ongoing development of the wellness complex. Alongside classic treatments, the use of local plants, oils and materials identified with the region seeks to connect Alpine healing traditions with the contemporary spa world.<\/p>\n

Culinary<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hubertus’ cuisine is based on a meeting between the culinary tradition of South Tyrol and Mediterranean and international influences. The kitchen team is headed by the chef Antonio Triscari<\/strong>, which focuses on fresh regional ingredients, including trout, Alpine cheeses and products from local agriculture. The combination of mountain ingredients with techniques and flavors from other regions in Italy and abroad allows the kitchen to move between traditional dishes and contemporary interpretations.
\nThe dining experience does not take place in one central dining room, but in eight dining spaces with different characteristics, some of which are decorated in a traditional Alpine style and others with a more contemporary and open language. Large panoramic windows bring in the views of the Posteria Valley, while the wood paneling, warm lighting and division into intimate seating areas give the spaces a homely feel.<\/p>\n

One of the most interesting spaces is the Bauernstube, a guest room inspired by the traditional living rooms of the region’s farmhouses. Its wooden panelling came from an old farmhouse dating back to 1889, which stood in the nearby Badia Valley, and was transferred to the hotel as part of the preservation of local carpentry and materials. Alongside these spaces, dinners are served in the form of a five- to six-course menu, while a breakfast buffet and a snack are served during the day. <\/p>\n

South Tyrol’s wine culture is given a central place in the culinary experience. The hotel’s wine cellar offers a selection of local wineries alongside Italian and international wines, and the various seating areas allow you to continue the evening by the fireplace, in the lounge or on the open terrace. The new panoramic bar, inaugurated in 2026, adds a contemporary social hub with original cocktails and an open view of the mountains.<\/p>\n

Location and environment<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hotel Hubertus is located in the village of Geiselsberg, in the municipality of Valdaora, above the Foster Valley in South Tyrol. Its location places it between the peaks of the Dolomites, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Rieserferner Mountains to the north. The meeting of the two mountain ranges creates a changing landscape of jagged ridges, wooded slopes, meadows and small villages scattered throughout the valley.
\nThe area is characterized by a unique cultural identity, combining Tyrolean traditions with Italian influences. This affinity is also present in the hotel, through the building materials, the design of the guest spaces and the local cuisine. A short distance away is Mount Kronplatz, one of the main ski centers in South Tyrol, which in the summer months becomes a space for hiking and mountain biking trails.<\/p>\n

The hotel’s connection to its surroundings is also reflected in its operational choices. As early as 1994, a wood chip heating system was installed on site, replacing an oil heating system, and later systems for producing solar energy and using water energy were added. The hotel uses local agricultural products and integrates suppliers and professionals from the region in its construction and renovation projects. Thus, alongside the extraordinary buildings, there is also a clear desire to preserve the economic and cultural ties with the environment in which the hotel operates.<\/p>\n

Experience<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although the architecture and spa pools are the main attractions of Hubertus, the experience of staying there extends beyond the built environment. The hotel’s activities program includes sunrise hikes, guided walking trails, electric bike rides, yoga and Pilates. Some of the tours are led by Christian Gasser himself, who has known the area since childhood and combines local stories and personal acquaintance with the landscape.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The connection to local tradition is also reflected in more intimate activities, such as farm visits, bread-baking workshops and regional food evenings. The hotel gardens feature alpine fruit trees and herbs, alongside a thematic trail called the Dolomites Garden, added in 2025 and presenting the geological history of the mountains, the local flora and fauna, as well as legends and myths that have developed in the area. One of the gardens also features a wooden bowling alley, inspired by the traditional South Tyrolean bowling game. <\/p>\n

In addition to these experiences, the hotel offers additional activities that vary according to the seasons, including winter snow hikes, horse riding tours and golf activities in collaboration with the Golf Club of the Foster Valley. The seasonal program allows guests to discover a different side of the region with each visit, depending on the landscape, weather and local traditions. The diversity reflects the character of Hubertus: a place where you can spend entire days among the pools and relaxation rooms, but also go out into the mountains and discover the environment from which its identity grew.<\/p>\n
