The Kimmel Eshkolot architectural firm, founded by Eitan Kimmel and Michal Kimmel-Eshkolot, is celebrating 40 years of extensive activity in the fields of architecture and design in Israel and abroad this year. A pop-up exhibition that opened last week somewhat summed up their journey, but according to them, they are always looking ahead, towards the next projects. And continue the work.

The exhibition created a kind of journey through time, focusing on the planning of public space, through projects that have become icons in the Israeli landscape, alongside those that were not built but were part of the journey of the firm and the team. The exhibition featured 40 different projects, reflecting the diversity of the firm’s activities, and was spread across all floors of the ‘Startup Nation Central’ building in Tel Aviv, which the firm planned and designed.Startup Nation Central | Photo by Amit GeronStartup Nation Central | Photo by Amit GeronSince its establishment in 1986, the office of Kimel Eshkolot has been located in the Neve Tzedek neighborhood of Tel Aviv. Their love for the neighborhood is also evident in their work, including projects to preserve and restore the historic neighborhood.

Their impressive activity earned them the Rokach Prize for Architecture in 1993, one of the firm’s highlights. “We were recognized as a young firm for our impact on the neighborhood’s renewal,” they note. Since then, they have won additional awards, including the 2011 Rechter Prize for the design of the Beersheba War Memorial and international recognition and awards for the design of the Memorial Hall on Mount Herzl, which they define as their most significant project to date. The Warrior’s House Beer Sheva | Photo by Amit GeronGiven their inspiring careers, this may not be a big surprise, but looking back, they have no sense of regret or regret – “It’s a matter of character, we always look ahead,” they say.

As young architects, they remember the experience of receiving their first project for planning – “It was a great achievement. Seeing a project you planned and sketched come to fruition is an incredible experience.”

Today, the firm has more than 30 architects and operates around the world. Among the firm’s international projects are the Jewish Museum in Albania, which is currently being built after winning an international competition, and the Malka restaurant in Palm Beach, Florida, which incorporated specially designed concrete blocks manufactured in Israel and shipped to the US in containers.Malka Restaurant | Photo by Amit GeronMalka Restaurant | Photo by Amit Geron“We try to choose our projects so that they are very different from each other, so that each project is a new adventure,” they say, adding that they are currently working on two projects related to aviation: “One is a new building for the Faculty of Aeronautics at the Technion. The building is located on the highest peak on campus, next to the historic building designed by architect Yohanan Ratner, and draws inspiration from the geometries of airplane wings. The second project is an El Al visitor center, where we are working together with a team from the industrial company on a very special flight experience.”Architects Eitan Kimmel and Michal Eshkolot | Photo by Raisa Varvitsky

If they had to give themselves advice as young architects, it would be: “Always do, always initiate. Don’t wait for things to happen, but make them happen.

Any energy a person produces always comes back to them in some way, even if it takes time.” This advice seems to have been applied as a way of life over the past four decades. This year (2025) they marked another record, and also won the prestigious Landau Prize from the Israel Lottery, for their many years of contribution to the field and their ongoing excellence in planning and design. The prize, which is awarded to people of culture, science and academia as a sign of recognition and appreciation for their work and contribution, was awarded this time for the first time in the field of architecture, which emphasizes the importance of the firm in the planning and design industries in Israel.
