When a dragonfly lands in the heart of the desert – a spectacular design journey between a powerful East and futuristic architecture

In the heart of Dubai, a city that has become a symbol of architectural ambition and multi-layered cultural vision, lies Dragonfly – a restaurant that doesn’t just serve food, it serves a complete experience. Behind the mesmerizing design is the international studioIodazine, who chose to draw inspiration from the motif that accompanies the place’s name – the dragonfly – and translate it into an exciting design concept, rich in layers and meaning.

The restaurant is spread over two levels in a glass structure typical of Dubai’s urban landscape. From the moment you enter, amidst traditional Japanese kokeshi statues that welcome diners, you feel like you have arrived in another world. It is a gateway to an encounter between ancient Asian culture and contemporary Western aesthetics, carefully designed

In the central space, a spectacular staircase leads to the Upper Lounge Gallery – a luxurious lounge with a DJ booth and a floating deck overlooking the lower seating area – creating a tension between intimacy and a sense of grandeur. An open kitchen is set on the ground level, inviting guests to watch the process of preparing the dishes – like a theatrical performance in the heart of the restaurant.

The highlight of the space is undoubtedly the central bar: a dramatic, circular, red glass structure, designed in 360 degrees and positioned at the heart of the restaurant as a formal and experiential anchor. Above it, hovering, almost in midair, is a sculptural 9-meter-long dragonfly – a powerful tribute to the name and spirit of the place.

The small details are not left behind: columns with granite bases and hand-carved dragons create a sense of drama and precision, while bamboo blinds and woven rattan screens balance the intensity with warmth and rich texture. It is a refined combination of natural materiality with fantastical imagery, telling a new and updated oriental story.
