From every angle and every view, this house is impressive and meticulous. And so it is perhaps even more surprising to discover that its opening details were far from exciting – “A rectangular plot of half a dunam, in a quiet and monotonous neighborhood; a semi-detached house, without a special view and without much sun,” says architect Nurit Ben Yosef. But it was precisely from those constraints that she created a dramatic house, rich in materiality and light, that tells a changing story of shadow and movement throughout the day.Ofri Paz | Stanley Home

The house, which covers an area of approximately 450 square meters and is spread over three floors, was built for a couple with two sons, two dogs and a cat, a family that loves to entertain, cook and enjoy the company of family and friends. “They asked for a super modern house with clean lines, but with a dramatic and prominent presence in the neighborhood landscape,” says Nurit. The requirement was for open and comfortable spaces for entertaining, with a kitchen that is the heart of the home, and to combine practicality suitable for a home with children and animals, with quality of life and bold design choices. As in many two-family projects, the shared wall was a design limitation: one less facade, one less air direction, less view. “In fact, this wall became the main story of the house,” she says. “Along the wall, open courtyards and a large central patio opened up,” she adds. The courtyards and patios create a sense of disconnection between the house and its neighbor, letting in natural light and emphasizing the horizontal and vertical axes of the house. You can already feel the drama at the entrance to the house – the entrance is located in front of floor-to-ceiling windows that open to the yard and pool. To the left is the kitchen, and to the right is a glass wall that also surrounds the patio. A long light slot accompanies the glass cube, creating a vertical axis that crosses the three floors of the building and bathes them in natural light. “In the evening, the rays of the western sun penetrate through this light slot and illuminate a blue bench that stands at the entrance, like a sculpture on which the rays are refracted and create colorful shadows in the space.” The openings in the project were believedElement Aluminum Company, who were required to provide detailed planning in the early planning stages: “We had to take into account wall thicknesses, construction, system transitions in the walls, and the material encounters with the windows inside and out,” notes Nurit, adding that they provided detailed digital planning before execution and also went over the planning again after the skeleton was completed “in order to avoid mistakes and achieve the perfect result.”

The patio is located in the center of the house and opposite the kitchen. The common wall forms a backdrop and is covered with natural stone in a three-dimensional two-dimensional processing. In its center is a tree and tropical vegetation, which adds freshness to the interior spaces and enhances the unique atmosphere of the house. Hanging iron stairs surround the patio and allow it to be seen from all directions. An additional balcony full of vegetation opens to those who go up to the upper floor and brings in additional natural light. Such a complex job requires perfect coordination between all the professionals involved. The coordination, alongside Nurit, was responsible forConstruction Supervisor Gal Maor joins Al Gal Project Supervision– “There is a meeting of many professionals and diverse materials here – stone cladding, stairs, lighting and windows. Gal was required to study the plans in advance, coordinate all the details with the field operators and ensure that everything is carried out efficiently and accurately. Thanks to him, this process was much more pleasant, fun and fruitful for me, for the tenants and for the professionals.”

At the request of the tenants, the entire public space can be viewed from the kitchen – from the entrance to the indoor and outdoor hospitality areas. It is built of dark metal and in its center is a long island covered in natural stone in shades of green-black – “The stone simulates palm trees and hints at the outdoor garden and the nature of the vegetation” notes Nurit. In front of the island is a mirror that reflects the patio, doubling it and intensifying the movement and materiality of it and the staircase. The island stands out especially against the background of the clean facade, above which is a narrow and long window that accompanies the wall all the way to the exit to the garden.

The clean lines that characterize the house and emphasize its features are made possible thanks to formal minimalism and the integration of electrical systems and appliances into built elements and carpentry.Insfera, a company specializing in smart electricity and audio-video solutions, was required to provide high-quality, well-designed solutions and to integrate them elegantly into the design. “In the stair area, for example, there are no nearby walls on which switches could be placed, so they were integrated into an iron column near the patio. All the systems, speakers, and security cameras are hidden from view and blend in with the design, without compromising the quality of life, which was very important to me and the clients.”

The house uses many textures in dark shades of black and graphite. The flooring is made of natural stone in a graphite shade and the living room walls are covered with large tiles by Itzik and Roy – a sanitary ware company. “We looked for quality products and interesting combinations of coverings. For example, we wrapped the entire long wall, from the kitchen to the living room, in black porcelain granite slabs with the movement of water,” notes the architect, adding that the lighting in the house was designed to emphasize the movement and unique texture of each material.Yatzik and Roy also provided all the sanitary ware and coverings in the bathrooms,There, Nurit continued the same atmosphere that characterizes the house: “In the guest bathroom, for example, we used wild-looking palettes in shades of green and black, reminiscent of the stone in the kitchen and the character of the garden. The result reflects the look of the house but with a higher intensity and a bolder look. In the parents’ bathroom, we repeated the black hue and the texture of the iron.”

The furniture in the house balances the dark colors of the material palette and is mostly in warm, bright tones, alongside a combination of colorful and transparent items in shades of green and blue, which bring the natural background of the house inside. The carpentry, performed by Arkady from Global Carpentry, completes the picture.“Carpentry is an integral part of home decoration and is actually the end product that is seen against the background of architecture. Personally, I see the carpenter as the most important professional in the project,” Nurit notes. In this house, there was a demand for challenging technical solutions such as hidden doors at the entrance to the pantry and guest bathrooms, alongside quality work that enriches the design of the house, as can be seen in the cabinet in the dining area: “It is one of the most beautiful and central elements in the house. It incorporates doors in black wood, which has been processed to bring out its texture, alongside glass doors,” she adds. The cabinet hides various systems, such as air conditioning, audio systems and plumbing, and also provides ample storage. “The transparency gives a dimension of depth and allows for the display of beautiful objects collected by the homeowners,” Nurit concludes.
