After years of right angles, cubes and straight lines, arches and curved lines are returning to our lives and the design of our homes. Like other trends in design and in general in recent times, this too is probably related, in one way or another, to our desire for softness and a return to nature, where, as we know, there are no right corners. Arches create a more organic and less engineered look. They refine the space, bring in warmth and are especially suitable for homes where we would like to introduce a touch of Mediterranean or classic style, but not only that.

You can see the arches and curved lines in each of the different layers of design and architecture: furniture, lighting fixtures, cabinets and mirrors with curved lines, as well as decorative wall painting that incorporates arches, can suit those of you who want to incorporate the trend into your home without going into a massive renovation. If you are about to build a new home or renovate, you can consider incorporating arched openings such as doors and windows, curved walls and arched ceilings. A great reference for this can be found in this apartment planned and designed by architect Tzahit Tshuva.

This is a 120 square meter apartment in a Jaffa building for preservation from the 1920s, which benefits from high ceilings and picturesque surroundings. The clients, who fulfilled a dream of immigrating to Israel after living in various European countries, wanted to feel the Jaffa atmosphere inside the house. At the same time, they were looking for visual cleanliness and a modern, minimalist design. “The main goal of the renovation was to bring the charm and picturesque beauty of Jaffa into the interior of the apartment,” explains the architect. For her, the arches were an essential element that connects old and new and creates a language, feeling, and atmosphere while maintaining a contemporary design that focuses on form and material.

Before we talk about the arches themselves, let’s highlight the clean and pleasant background that Tshit created. The background was designed to give space to the geometric lines of the arches, emphasize the wonderful proportions created in the space thanks to the division and high ceiling, and provide a perfect backdrop for the homeowners’ collection of photographs. The walls were painted a light, warm shade and the floor was covered with wood. The carpentry was designed within niches to maintain the traditional atmosphere and was designed without decorations other than exquisite wooden handles.

From here we will continue to the stars of the project – the built arches. By designing arches of different sizes and proportions, the architect created a dynamic and natural look – “I created a rhythm of different arches that create a kind of layers, which remind me of walking the streets of Jaffa,” explains the architect. The central arch is wide and tall and the dining area is located below it. When viewed from the living room, it appears to embrace a smaller, narrower arch that separates the public and private areas. The small arch was emphasized by a door and a black Belgian profile combined with glass. If you delve a little deeper into the pictures, you can see more rounded lines, such as the niche next to the sofa in the living room, the high window above the display case, and more. You will also find natural-amorphous lines here, such as the dining table top, which create a warm and soft atmosphere. This creates a play between different lines – straight, rounded and amorphous, which combine together for a modern yet classic and timeless look.
